Being a maker is tough... and in our opinion there is no tougher film maker than Werner Herzog. Rescuing Joaquin Phoenix from a car wreck and being shot with an air rifle during an interview are small potatoes for Herzog, who literally pulled a ship over a mountain for his 1982 film Fitzcarraldo.
Documentarian Les Blank could be the one filmmaker to rival Herzog's capacity for adventure, as he set out to capture the making of the Fitzcarraldo in the Amazon basin in his film Burden of Dreams. The film follows "the chaotic production of 'Werner Herzog's epic Fitzcarraldo (1982), showing how the film managed to get made despite problems that would have floored a less obsessively driven director" -Michael Brook for IMDB.
